Pisa, Italy

The morning we spent in Pisa was the only rainy couple of hours during our entire 11 days.  We were so blessed with wonderful weather.  Although you have the option to climb the tower, we opted out and walked around the square during our free time.

San Gimigano, Italy

One of our optional excursions included an afternoon in San Gimigano, a small town tucked into a hill.  This is one place where everyone said we needed a full day here!  It is so cute and so many great places to get your Italian souvenirs like pottery, food, etc.  There's also a big museum of torture that we really wanted to check out, but we didn't have the time.

Our Dinner in an Italian Castle

One of our great secret experiences that we had, thanks to Trafalgar, was eating dinner in a castle turned winery and olive oil estate still fuctioning as such.  We had a tour of the castle, which is still a private residence and was built long ago for the banking family that once rivaled the Medici's.

The 80 year old grandmother of the family made the food for all 52 of us.  It was the best meal we had the whole trip.  I can't say how many times I filled my plate and wine glass!

Florence, Italy

Florence (Firenze) was smaller than Rome but it was nice to be in a more intimate area.  Rome was huge!  In Florence, all the main sights were within walking distance of each other.  And since it is rooted in the Tuscany countryside, the bus trip around the city was beautiful, even though it wasn't in the sunflower season.

The tiny people at the top... it's huge!

Unfinished works by Michelangelo... awesome to see how he made the statues

I used to think the Statue of David by Michelangelo was like human size, maybe a little taller.  No.  He is huge!  Michelangelo did nothing halfway. He was go big or go home.

I need about 4 of my hands to grab one of those buns.

Island of Burano, Venice, Italy

The Island of Burano lies near Venice, Italy and is a short water taxi ride away.  It's an amazing little town with lots of fish dishes, little old Italian ladies yelling from their windows, and kids playing in the town square.  There's lace work in all the shops and lots of glass, typical of Venice's style.

Assisi, Italy

Our little stop in Assisi, a small stone town built into the hillside was my favorite stop during our trip.  When I pictured Italy, I pictured this town.  All the buildings and houses were made of the same stone and the town centered around the church of St. Francis, one of the patron saints of Italy and the saint of animals and the environment.
